Hatchery

Our hatchery is one of the largest of its type in the UK, with a weekly capacity of 370000 eggs. This generally consists of approximately 57000 mallard eggs, 87000 partridge eggs and223000 pheasant eggs. At the peak period of the season this means that we are incubating approximately 1.5 million eggs.

Eggs are brought to the hatchery from the various flocks around our farm, where they are all packed, washed and disinfected. We use a state of the art egg washing machine that was custom made for our requirements by MS Technologies of Kettering.

Once the eggs are perfectly clean and cull eggs removed, they are then stored in our environmentally controlled egg store. This egg store is equipped with turning facilities so the eggs are automatically turned hourly when in storage

Each trolley is marked with its own identification indicating the set date, the flock origin and the breed

We preheat all of our eggs for 12 hours before setting. We set duck eggs on a Tuesday, pheasant eggs on a Thursday and partridge eggs on a Friday, this is to ensure that all eggs hatch on the Monday

We transfer to the hatchers on a Wednesday and Thursday for pheasants and partridge then on Friday for the mallard

Our chicks are counted, (this is usually done either by hand or by our computerised chick counter) and boxed ready for delivery on Monday or Tuesday mornings
